About Us
Welcome to Great Northern, a family-run cabin and off-grid stay experience on the edge of the wild, nestled near Lake Superior and the Boundary Waters of northern Minnesota.
We’re Stevie & Juani, partners in life, business, and big-hearted adventure. Our story starts far from deep in Patagonia, Argentina, where horses outnumber cars and time moves with the wind. Years ago, Stevie crossed 1200 miles of that landscape solo with two horses, one dog, and a dream to live in harmony with nature. That dream eventually led us north.
We built Great Northern from the ground up, by hand and heart. Together with our dogs (and now a growing family), we’ve crafted cabins and off-grid escapes that honor two landscapes we love: the windswept Patagonian steppe and the maple-draped boreal forests of Minnesota.
We’re raising our daughter here, under wide skies and northern lights, surrounded by wild places and warm people. Life is simple, soulful, and sometimes muddy. We wouldn’t trade it for the world.
Our Stays
Each of our cabins tells a story:
Gaucho – An off-grid A-frame inspired by the Argentine frontier.
Haus -- Cabin near the Gunflint Trail offer immersion in a quiet maple forest. Our homage to The North.
Campo – A dovetail-timber cabin with decor from our Patagonian expeditions.

Why We Do This
We believe in slow mornings. In lighting fires and cooking over flame. In bringing your dogs and your boots and maybe even leaving your phone behind. We created Great Northern to offer more than just a place to sleep, we offer a place to remember who you are.
We’re proud to call Grand Marais, Minnesota home. We’re grateful to be part of this place, its Native heritage, its waves of newcomers, and a shared love for the quiet, powerful wild that still surrounds us.
Here’s to slowing down, staying wild, and sharing the story, together.
We can’t wait to welcome you.
